How to pick the right tour by days available
1 full day: Chichen Itza and Magical Towns (perfect balance of archaeology, cenote and magical town).
2-3 days: add Uxmal or Santa Barbara to mix archaeology/cenotes.
4-5 days: Celestun or Las Coloradas as a nature/coast day.
7+ days: Bacalar (Saturday) + Tulum or Isla Mujeres (Friday) for Caribbean coverage.
Merida: what to do in the White City before or after your tour
Merida is not just the base for your excursions: it's a destination in itself that deserves at least a full day of exploration. Here's what you can't miss while waiting for your tour departure or upon returning in the afternoon:
- Paseo de Montejo: Merida's most emblematic avenue, lined with French-style mansions from the 19th century built during the henequen boom. Walk it at sunset when the facades light up.
- Plaza Grande and San Ildefonso Cathedral: the oldest cathedral in continental Mexico (completed 1598), built with stones from Maya temples. Next to it, the MACAY Contemporary Art Museum.
- Lucas de Galvez Market: the main market of the city. A labyrinth of tropical fruits, spices, handicrafts, Yucatecan hammocks and traditional food stalls. Ideal for trying fruits like mamey, guanabana and black sapote.
- Santiago and Santa Ana neighborhoods: ideal for Yucatecan dining (Calle 47 in Santa Ana concentrates several typical restaurants) and for the traditional Yucatecan serenade on Thursday nights in Santa Lucia.
- Gran Museo del Mundo Maya: one of the most modern anthropological museums in Mexico, with interactive exhibits on Maya civilization from the Preclassic period to the present day. Award-winning contemporary architecture.
- Animaya: zoo and conservation park with free safari ride on weekends. A family alternative if you're traveling with children.
- Urban cenotes: if you don't have time for a cenote tour, Cenotes de Cuzama park is only 30 minutes away and can be explored by truck.
How to get to Merida and get around the city
Merida is one of the best-connected cities in southeastern Mexico. It has an international airport (MID) with direct flights from Mexico City, Monterrey, Guadalajara, Houston, Miami and Toronto, among others. From the airport to downtown Merida it's approximately 15-20 minutes by taxi or Uber (estimated fare: $150-$250 MXN). There is also ADO bus service connecting Merida with Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Campeche, Villahermosa and Palenque. If you arrive by car, federal highway 180 connects with Cancun and highway 261 with Campeche, both in good condition.
Once in Merida, the center is perfectly walkable. Uber operates throughout the city and is economical (most trips within the center cost less than $80 MXN). The urban bus service covers routes to the north and periphery. Traditional taxis are another option, though it's best to agree on the fare before getting in.
