Fitting flights around tour days
This is where planning most often goes wrong, and it has nothing to do with the airport — it is about departure times.
Arrival day
Tours start early: most of the catalogue leaves between 7:00 and 10:00 in the morning. If your flight lands the same day, the timing is very tight. It is more comfortable to arrive the day before and leave the tour for the next day.
Departure day
The long routes get back downtown late. Chichen Itza and the Mayan Train return around 20:00; Las Coloradas and Rio Lagartos likewise; Bacalar and Isla Mujeres can arrive as late as 22:00. With an early or mid-afternoon flight on your last day, do not book a tour.

Loose ends that save trouble
- Cash in pesos. There are ATMs in the terminal, but small change for the first day is worth having.
- Currency exchange is usually better downtown than at the airport.
- Save the full address of your accommodation, with cross streets. Merida addresses are given by street number and crossings ("Calle 61 x 62 y 64"), and without the crossing the door is hard to find.
- Agree the price before getting in any vehicle, whichever it is.
- If you land in the small hours, have your way out sorted in advance: the terminal empties quickly at that time.

How much time should I leave between my flight and my first tour?
Tours leave early: most between 7:00 and 10:00 in the morning. Arriving the same day makes for a tight calculation. It is more comfortable to arrive the day before and book the tour for the following day.
And for the flight home?
It is best not to book a tour on your departure day if the flight is early or mid-afternoon. The long routes — Chichen Itza, Las Coloradas, Bacalar, Isla Mujeres — get back downtown between 20:00 and 22:00.
